Holiday opportunities in the area around Polopos

If you drive up from Salobreña, straight through the mountains of the Alpujarra, you will inevitably pass a small village that has recently become famous due to daily television broadcasts on RTL 4. The Spanish village of Polopos, where, besides following the ups and downs of the participants, you can also enjoy the impressive views of the Costa Tropical.

On the way to the Costa Tropical, you literally pass by the impressive Sierra Nevada. In summer, it is a popular hiking area, and during the ski season, which often lasts until May, you can ski on 106 kilometers of slopes. After hiking or skiing, you can relax within an hour by swimming in the Mediterranean Sea on the beach of Salobreña. Around this white village, which is completely built on a rock, there is plenty to do. A logical start is a visit to the 13th-century Moorish castle, which is literally the highlight of the village on the rock. In the evening, the castle is fairy-tale illuminated, and the best view of it is from the sky bar on the rooftop terrace of the hotel/restaurant Miba (www.hotelmiba.es).

Those of us who are more active can go kitesurfing or paragliding, rent a sailboat, or go diving. Next to the beach are the golf courses of Playa de Granada, and in almost every village, you can find a diving school or canoe rental.

In nearby villages like Almuñécar and La Herradura, excavations have been done, and castle ruins and aqueducts from past times have been preserved. Motril is a larger city where shoppers can find what they need. In the city of Granada, of course, we cannot miss the imposing Moorish Alhambra palaces, a must for every visitor to the city. Furthermore, a visit to one of the many flamenco shows is almost indispensable, but besides flamenco, Granada’s nightlife has much more to offer for those who don’t want to go to bed early.

The Costa Tropical owes its name to the subtropical climate with more than 300 days of sunshine. Local farmers therefore cultivate fruits such as bananas, mangoes, and avocados. You will, of course, find these reflected in the kitchens along the coast, together with a wide variety of fish and seafood and excellent regional wines, because enjoying what the gastronomy offers is perhaps the most important activity of the day.

Would you rather get to know Salobreña and the Costa Tropical in person? The rental agency Villas Colores Spain can provide you with all the details about the above and, if necessary, reserve tickets for places like the Alhambra for you.
